How to Buy a Gold Necklace in Hong Kong and Calculate the Charges
In Hong Kong, a by-weight gold necklace is usually priced from weight, the day’s gold rate, a commission and a labour or craftsmanship fee. Some pieces are fixed-price jewellery, where design and brand value are built into one tag.
Know the unit before calculating
Hong Kong shops may quote by tael, mace/candareen-style sub-units, or gram. The Chinese Gold and Silver Exchange trading method states that one tael troy equals 37.429 grams. If a shop quotes HK$ per tael, divide by 37.429 to compare with a per-gram quote. If a tag uses “钱” or another sub-unit, ask the shop to write the gram weight and conversion on the invoice instead of guessing.
Formula and commission base
The Chow Sang Sang gold jewellery pricing explainer describes gold weight, the ornaments selling rate, commission and labour as separate price components. The Chow Tai Fook gold price calculation guide gives a similar sample calculation. The key point is that the commission is generally applied to the gold value portion, while labour is added separately; stores may display it differently, so confirm the calculation before paying.
Worked example
Assume a necklace weighs 0.25 tael, the shop’s ornament sell price is HK$46,310 per tael, commission is 2%, and labour charge is HK$200:
Gold value: 0.25 × 46,310 = HK$11,577.50
Commission: 11,577.50 × 2% = HK$231.55
Total before any other store-specific items: 11,577.50 + 231.55 + 200 = HK$12,009.05
This is a method, not a live quote. The current gold rate, weight, labour fee, member discount, rounding and payment terms can change the final amount.
Receipt checklist
- Exact weight in tael and/or gram.
- Gold purity/fineness and whether it is by-weight or fixed price.
- Gold rate used that day and whether it is per tael or per gram.
- Commission percentage and labour fee amount.
- Exchange, repair and buy-back terms written near the sale date.
A buy-back quote uses the seller’s purchase terms rather than simply reversing the original sale calculation. Confirm any testing or handling deductions and whether workmanship fees are recoverable; get current terms in writing.
